Introduction Brief (How To..) 2

We worked out a format which fitted how we had folded our envelope and printed a mock up version to test it out and see if there were any changes to make. One of the problems we found was there was too much text at the top of the page which students probably wouldn't want to read and may put them off taking a leaflet.

Test net of how the leaflet would fit into the envelope. Found some appropriately weighted card which we would eventually be laser cutting with the title of our project.

To start our design for the envelope we looked at various colours and page layouts from the research we had gathered. We wanted the design to be as minimal as possible and match the leaflet so it didn't distract from the students work in the leaflet. Below are some colour and layout experiments with the title we chose.

After discussing as a group what the most appropriate format was for the envelope we created some mock designs on illustrator which could then be laser cut to show the leaflet underneath.

Group Crit - 03/10/13

Toward the final stage of this project this interim crit was very helpful for our group as we finished with a list of changes which we all agreed would benefit the project and had not picked up on before we talked to another group. Here is the list of changes:

  • Good idea to print something on back of leaflet to turn it into a poster - this may encourage students to keep hold of it.
  • Too much information/writing - top section overcrowded and might be overlooked.
  • Format of title a bit formal - looks like the start of an essay, don't underline heading.
  • Put title on front section of leaflet so when you take it out of the envelope there is something to see right away.
  • Print on textured paper to match envelope.

We made the changes from the feedback in the crit and I think the piece as a whole has befitted from it. The text is now less overwhelming as we have summarised the previous paragraphs into short sentences. The title and font have also been altered, changing the type to Gotham and removing the underline to make it see less authoritative and the title and text flows without any harsh breaks. We applied this to the back of the leaflet to create a clean and simple poster which corresponds with the rest of the project.

The final piece works really well as a whole and we were all pleased with the end product. However the first envelope was too small for the leaflet so we had to remeasure and re-cut to an appropriate size. To expand upon this project we could have added more students work or even added current practitioners and created a book with the same structure across the pages. Overall I am happy with how this project turned out a I feel that it fulfils is purpose which is to reassure new student who are concerned about the standard of their own work.
