Introduction Brief (How To..)

Our introduction brief titled 'How To...' we where asked to compile as many problems as we could come up with regarding being a fresher in Leeds. As a class we then narrowed them all down to ten that stood out as more significant then in small groups we were tasked to provide a solution or way to help with these problems - ours being 'concerned about standard of own work. The work produced by students at the college was to a very high standard and a lot of new students felt out of their depth.

We researched different ways of presenting our work. Our ideas focused on something a fresher would want to keep with them and we experimented with a variety of formal ranging from origami fortune tellers, flow charts, quizzes and posters.

Being first years our selves we realised we didn't have the knowledge or experience be able to reassure new students. Our solution to this was to ask third years students as they would have been in the same position, have overcome this concern and are now the ones setting the high standard. We sent an emails out to all third year Graphic Design students asking for them to send a piece of work from there first year which they didn't like and a more recent piece which they were proud of.

Now that we had gathered the content for our project we needed to decide the best way of presenting the information. The format we wanted was to show the images side by side with a quote from one of the third year students in a gridded layout. This ruled out a few of our previous options such as the origami and flow chart poster but we still wanted to produce something different from a standard leaflet which thousands of freshers would be given during the week and something that could be carried easily. One member of our group had picked up a business card size leaflet which folded out into a larger poster (below).

We thought this format would fit our project perfectly as the 3 sections could show the two third year images and their quote. We also thought about creating and envelope to hold the leaflet which would make it easier to hand out, also making it slightly different and more unusual. Below are some ideas of how it would look.

We got 5 responses from the email which was perfect as this was the amount we were hoping to put into the poster. Each student provided images like we had asked and also a piece of advice. The advice they provided was more than we wanted ideally so we picked out a few key lines.

Below are a few prototypes of how we wanted our piece to look. It was helpful creating a mock up so we could see how exactly it would all fold and fit together and made visualising the layout clearer.
