Communication is a Virus: Campaign Aim

As part of our campaign we want to create images exposing the people behind the anti gay laws in Russia. The idea is that these images can be uploaded to peoples display pictures on social networking sites and posted on blogs to rase awareness of what is happening in Russia. We have decided to focus on individuals to avoid generalisation and seeming ignorant which we intend to backup with facts, statistics and quotes from news articles/websites/social networks ect and present this information in the form of a small zine, leaflet or pack which will be cheap to reproduce and hand out.

Jamie Reid

Jamie Reid is an English artist and anarchist. His work, featuring letters cut from newspaper headlines in the style of a ransom note, came close to defining the image of punk rock, particularly in the UK.

This song is about rebelling against British politics. A lot of young people felt alienated by the stifling rule of the old-fashioned royal monarchy. The Queen (Queen Elizabeth), was their symbol.

The British national anthem is called "God Save The Queen." This mocks it in a big way, which did not go over well with English royalty.
This became an anthem for the Punk movement in England. It expressed the anger young people felt toward the establishment.

The reason this gained a lot of attention was that it was shocking but not directly offensive to anyone. It was a straight forward portrayal of how people felt about the monarchy and exposed how other people felt when the song gained a large amount of popularity and notoriety.

The way the type has been overlaid onto the image defaces it and removes the queens identity, suggesting that the Queen should be removed from her position. We want to approach this campaign in a similar way and spread a simple but powerful image.
