CoP 2 Study Task 3 - Establishing a Research Question

Editorial

The general theme I want to explore for my research question is editorial design. I would like to look at how magazines are shaped by who they are aimed at (free magazines ad heavy, specialist magazines may focus on content, others it is more about the overall brand image which take aesthetic properties into account).

To make my research more specific I plan to look at magazines that appeal to different people and how they differ in content and design. An interesting practical investigation would be to create a magazine where the content from high end specific magazines is swapped with images and text found in cheaper general ones.

Magazines to look into:

Huck, Vice, Little White Lies, Cereal, Cramp, Wired, Empire, Time, Hypebeast, Ditto Press

Old vs new media

Big publishers vs small independent magazines an editorial design-focused essay, researching into smaller magazine agencies such as Church of London (Little White Lies, Huck), compared to larger publishing houses, like the companies behind Time and Empire magazines.

Role of print publications in contemporary culture and in the media, what makes print different from digital.

How do (magazines, printed publications, blogs) help shape our society and influence contemporary culture???

Essay Question:

How can editorial design be used as a force for social development and change? or How can printmaking be used as a force for social development and change?
